Pay Attention Homeowners And Check Your Water Meters For Leaks
One of the worst things that homeowners choose not to do
is never opened up their water meter cover. I don't even think most
homeowners know where the water meter actually is located, but that's
going to need to change, starting today.
If you don't know where your water meter is located, you could always
contact your local utility company, to ask for assistance. Another
method, that I like to use, would simply be to walk around the house and
look for the water meter housing, which is usually located near your
streets or alley.
You'll be looking for something that says water or water meter on it and
it should be even with the ground. Sometimes water meters are located in
sidewalks or driveways, but you need to find out where it is, just in
case there is a emergency in your home, you will need to be able to shed
your water off.
There are plenty of reasons why people don't ever open their water meter
cover, one of them has to do with insects like spiders and cockroaches.
They love dark areas like your water meter housing and I wouldn't
recommend sticking your hand down their, just in case.
Once you locate your water meter cover and you have removed it, there
shouldn't be any water inside of the water meter box. If there is water
inside of the water meter box, it could be leaking and this isn't a good
thing. Thousands of gallons of water each year are lost, simply because
people never take the time to check their water meter, to make sure that
it isn't leaking.
If there is water in your water meter, make sure that the water isn't
leaking into the water meter housing from your sprinklers or from
something else. A little common sense can go a long way, if you choose
to use it. If you don't know anything about water meters or plumbing,
contact a plumber as soon as possible, but fix those water meter leaks
and let's start thinking water conservation.
