Interviewing A New Home Builder - Secrets From The Inside
If you're thinking about building a home, one of the
first things you're going to need to do is find a reputable home
builder. This isn't as hard as you think, but you had better plan on
spending some time, before making your final decision.
I've been building homes for years and would like to share a secret with
you from the inside. Most new home builders are
looking
for reputable contractors, with out realizing that these contractors
are looking for reputable clients. In other words, the contractors whose
planning on building your home might not be interested in working for
you, at all.
As you're interviewing home builders, plan on them interviewing you. It
doesn't take me long to figure out if someone's going to be a big
problem to work with. If you've given as many estimates as I have, you
learn to read people like a book. People reveal clues about themselves
all day long and they're easy to spot if you know what you're looking
for.
One time I was talking to a client and it slipped out, that they didn't
have any extra time for me to call them during the week. Any decisions
that would need to be made couldn't be made until the weekend. This
could have been a nightmare for any contractor who took the job.
Another time I was talking to a homeowner who mentioned someone living
on their property, who had a violent temper. It's hard enough to build
the home, let alone having someone attack you regularly, while you're
working.
If you're serious about building a home and looking for a contractor,
remember, you're not going to be the only one doing the interviewing.
